GIVING IT SOCKS IN MALAHIDE!

Local Schools go head to head at this year’s Credit Union Schools Quiz

(10th February 2012) Several local primary schools in Malahide and surrounding district took part in the first exciting stage of the countrywide 2012 Credit Union Schools Quiz Competition, organised by Malahide Credit Union at St Sylvesters GAA Club on Monday 6th February 2012.

This year even more schools joined in the fun while parents, teachers and friends came along to support pupils from St Oliver Plunkett, Pope John Paul II, St Nicholas of Myra, Scoil an Duinninigh and St Andrews as they battled it out for the winning prizes and a place in the second stage of the nationwide competition.

Congratulations to the winning Senior Team from St Oliver Plunkett and the winning Junior Team from Pope John Paul II.  The Junior and Senior runner-up teams both came from St Oliver Plunkett after an exciting, nail-biting tie breaker!  Winning teams were presented with certificates and prizes.

The annual event, now in its 21st year has become the highlight of the school calendar, attracting over 25,000 participants in over 300 venues throughout the 32 counties.  The Quiz, organized by the Irish League of Credit Unions, is run throughout the winter months in communities all over Ireland by volunteers from over 496 ILCU affiliated credit unions.  With the aim of encouraging teamwork among young school children under the age of 13, the questions for the Quiz are compiled by primary school teachers and will cover topics such as geography, history, music, literature and sport.  Local winners now progress to the Chapter Level Final in ALSAA on Sunday, March 4th.

Commenting on the first stage of the competition, Malahide Credit Union Manager, Vivienne Keavey said:  “We are delighted that one of the highlights of the school year coincides with the opening of our brand new premises on Main Street.  We would like to thank all the schools and faculty involved this year.  One of the primary objectives of the credit union is to encourage saving from an early age.  This annual event not only presents a wonderful opportunity for the students to have fun, but also serves to remind parents and teachers of the great benefits of educating children about money, helping them to develop strong saving habits and teaching them about the value of investing in their future.”

Speaking at the 2012 Quiz Launch, President of the ILCU Jimmy Johnstone said:  “We wholeheartedly support the development of young people in communities all over Ireland.  We are delighted to be here marking the 21st year of the Quiz and to launch the 2012 event which is set to be our biggest yet.  I want to say a big thank you to our volunteers from credit unions nationwide who work incredibly hard to make sure this event is a success year on year. The purpose of the credit union movement is more than merely providing financial services and this is a very important event for us. This is a way for children around Ireland to have lots of fun while learning the importance of team work in achieving success.”

Opening Day on Main Street! - January 18, 2012

MALAHIDE CREDIT UNION IS NOW OPEN ON MAIN STREET!

Malahide Credit Union Opens for Business at Brand New Premises

on Main Street

(Malahide-Wednesday 18th January 2012) This is a very historical and momentous time for the Board, staff and members of Malahide & District Credit Union.  After a period of over 40 years and much deliberation, Malahide Credit Union has moved from Railway Avenue to new premises on Main Street, and officially opened for business on Wednesday 18th January at 10.00am.

Over the years, Malahide Credit Union has played an integral part in serving its members and the community at large.  In moving to Main Street, the Credit Union will now operate from one of the key buildings in the heart of Malahide Village.

The mission of Malahide Credit Union is to fulfil the financial needs of members through excellent service, based on mutual trust and integrity.  The Credit Union’s professional staff, who work tirelessly to provide services and products to members, is comprised of Manager, Vivienne Keavey, Lucia Kane, Kathleen Jennings, Aileen Lawlor, Caroline McDonnell and Helen Daffy.

Subsequent to the lodgement of a planning application, the Credit Union launched its ‘CU on Main Street’ campaign, followed by months of planning, building and construction.

Chairperson Bryan O’Flaherty said:  “Having obtained the premises, we sought to make a positive visual contribution to the village streetscape. Following extensive research, we decided to remove the existing timber panelling and rebuild the piers.  Many of you will remember these premises being occupied by Hogans Supermarket. Using traditional materials of brick and timber, the new façade represents a modern solution, while respecting the traditional appearance of the village. Internally, the building has been completely refurbished to comply with modern building standards including access, insulation and security.  We now have a building in the centre of Malahide and one with which our members can be proud to be associated with.

Bryan O’Flaherty added:  “I believe Malahide Credit Union to be a special organisation comprised of people proud of their past and excited about their future. Above all, I believe we are defined by the character and integrity of our members and for all our members, we focus on providing excellent quality and service in all that we do. We continue to strive to serve by developing strong technology, and products; to innovate and create, with a view to providing higher visibility, more efficient operations, enhanced services and ultimately growing membership.”

Manager Vivienne Keavey said:  “We are now in a time when every community needs a strong Credit Union to help them through the recession and we firmly believe that this move will play a key role in supporting this. Our view is that to continue the success we have enjoyed in the past, we need to build on it together for our future.  We have the significant benefit of being part of a strong Credit Union movement and, in the case of members of Malahide Credit Union, we are fortunate to be part of a group in our community who recognise the benefits of organising their finances on a “not for profit” basis rather than relying totally on banks and similar financial institutions.  The investment in our new premises has positioned us well to deal with the ongoing economic situation and the increasing challenges of members’ needs.  We look forward to welcoming more people through our new doors over the coming months.”

As part of the Malahide Has It Festival 2011, Malahide Credit Union was delighted to host a very special photographic Expo of a unique collection of photographs displayed by the Malahide Historical Society.
